The Glossika app does not currently use the same daily goals or progress-tracking system as the Legacy app.
Instead, the focus is on exploring sentences at your own pace and practising the sentences you have encountered through Shadowing and Dictation in Train mode.
The Listening Only mode is currently available in the Glossika Legacy app but not in the Glossika app.
In Glossika Legacy, listening-only mode played the base language audio first and then the target language, so you could practice without looking at your screen.
In the Glossika app, we stopped pairing base and target languages, and there were two main reasons for that.
The first is the kind of content we want to make.
We want to add more expressions that are specific to a language and its culture. “The elephant in the room,” for example, is very natural in English, but if you translate it word for word into another language, it doesn’t mean anything. If every sentence has to have a recording in every base language, we can’t really include content like this.
The second is that pairing base and target audio made the amount of content uneven.
Learners could only get sentences that existed in both their base and target language. So if we had 1,000 recordings in English, 500 in Mandarin and 800 in Spanish, someone learning Spanish from English could get up to 800 sentences, but someone learning Spanish from Mandarin would only get 500.
Both of these were holding back how much we could add, so we made the hard call to drop the base language audio.
